Transparency in the twilight zone:
During Obama’s Union Day speech he called for bipartisanship with Republicans to create jobs. He indicated there are things “we both agree on”. Obama urged congress to pass several trade pact agreements. It was rumored that Speaker Boehner was to meet privately with the president to discuss common ground. This much we heard. Now for the part that might only happen a land between reality and dreams….. The Twilight Zone, reminiscent of a “hope” for transparency some believed would be true. “You’ll be able to see negotiations live on CSPAN”:
As the screen goes blank, Rod Stewart announces, “what you are about to see and hear is in the twilight zone”
Boehner:
“Mr. President, I’m glad we both agree on the trade pacts. You’ve talked about them several times in the last month and in fact, chastised Republicans for not passing them. Forgive my impudence Mr. President, but how can we pass them if they are still sitting on your desk? You have to send them to congress but be assured, we’d expect them to fly through the House as soon as you submit them to us. This truly would be working on common ground which we agree on.
Mr. President, we’ll be waiting and, by-the-way, please don’t hide some language into the proposal which you know we will not agree to, which would give you an excuse to say Republicans are against jobs. Yes, Mr. President, we know you’d like to add some paybacks to the unions and sign off on funding of EAS(essential air service). This is the boondoggle that gives millions to airports which average 6 passengers per flight.
Obama:
“Well, Ok. Looks like you got me in a corner”
Obama, (after meeting, announcing to press)
“We have bi partisan agreement, followed by blaming and chastising Congress for not acting sooner”.
Obama (at joint session of congress)
“I have bridged the divide and achieved common ground with the Republican congress. We expect several things to move forward this week to create jobs. The rest of the presentation is pretty much like listening to Charlie Brown’s mother on one of the TV specials and sounds something like: waaa, waaa waaaaa”
Boehner (sitting in office, receives Obama’s trade pack agreement). In the agreement are dozens of surprises, including union pay back deals to fund EAS and perhaps some other cleverly written perks for cities where his support is low.
“Mr. President, this is not what we agreed to and we specifically said we would not support the wastefulEAS funding. Unfortunately, the congress cannot pass this bill, which you knew. Now you are likely to politicize this at the expense of Americans.”
Obama, (to media)
“After agreeing to items where we have common ground, Republicans have been co-opted by the Tea Party, showing their true anti-jobs position. I’m sorry American. I tried but the Republican Congress is obstructing my efforts, waaaa, waaaa, waaaa.”
Heard from every talking head and seen in major print media in big letters”
“ANTI JOB REPUBLICANS STAND IN THE WAY OF OBAMA’S JOB PLAN”

Bipartisanship is an election term only. You will be hard pressed to find a time when a political figure has used this term outside of an election cycle.
