Frequently asked questions

I already filled out a form to receive email.  Is this the same?

No, receiving the email is not the same as “membership”.  Anyone can receive our email.  Some just want to receive updates and others may live too far away to be active.  While we wish everyone who supports our mission will become a formal member, we understand some may just want to be kept in the loop.

Why do we need formal membership?

This is partially a requirement of our by-laws as a 501-3C and to officially recognize voting members.   Should there be an instance where someone acted inappropriately, it would allow us to revoke a membership.   Should such a situation arise, members would be asked to vote to expel an offender.   In addition, to elect officers and decide on critical issues, membership is required for voting.   One such vote, (a straw vote) will be in advance of delegates to the MI4CS convention on Feb 25.    In addition, delegates themselves must be chosen.

Must members be present to vote?

We would like to offer an online method for doing this.  Details have not been worked out yet.

What is the cost of membership?

A nominal fee per year (Jan1 – Dec 31) of $20 per individual or $30 per couple in addition to a pledge to support the mission of Ottawa County Patriots.    Individual membership enables a single vote and a couple’s membership enables two votes.   Other immediate family members under 21 of an individual or couple may become members for $1- per year.

What is the money used for?

All funds received by the OCP including membership dues and donations are used for the direct expenses of operating the OCP including: Room rental, equipment rental, meeting expenses such as refreshments, printing & duplication, web site expenses, our Radio show, special events , advertising and other miscellaneous expenses. A detailed year end financial report is available on request.  There are no paid staff for the OCP.

Are there treasury reports?

There will be monthly treasurers reports detailing revenues, expenses and fund balances presented at the last meeting of each month. Additional financial reviews or audits may be required by the state of Michigan and the IRS. Written reports will be available upon request as required by law.

Is there a membership card?

Yes, Gene Welch has a design in progress.  Once final, a sequentially numbered, laminated membership card will be provided for each member.

Who should become a member?

It is hopeful, that each and everyone person who believes in the mission statement of the Ottawa County Patriots will join.   Membership is not mandated and our meetings are open to the public.   Membership is required to hold any office.
